WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – DNA evidence from a discarded cigarette was used to capture the man charged with killing Kevin “Hollywood” Hein at a Neenah tavern on October 14th.
36-year old Casey Cameron is charged with first-degree intentional homicide, armed robbery and recklessly endangering safety. A $750,000 bond was set in court on Wednesday.
According to the criminal complaint, Cameron covered his face before entering Short Branch Saloon with a gun and demanding the bartender fill up a bag with money. Hein reportedly made comments towards Cameron before following him into the parking lot – despite the gunman telling patrons not to follow him. Other patrons say they heard gunshots once both men were outside.
Police say on November 1st, an officer was following Cameron based on a tip that he matched the suspect description. Cameron dropped a cigarette butt out of his vehicle, and the officer stopped to collect it. DNA on the cigarette was matched to a bandana left at the scene during the armed robbery. The results came in on November 8th, and Cameron was arrested that day without incident.
The criminal complaint says “It is believed the statements of Casey Cameron are made contrary to his penal interest” but does not include any statements from Cameron.
Cameron is set to return to court on Monday.
