APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A reported 55 million Americans are planning to travel for Turkey Day next week, ranking this year as the second-highest Thanksgiving travel volume since 2000. That’s according to AAA. Appleton International Airport is preparing for those flying in, out, or connecting with flights here in the Fox Valley.
Holiday travel can be busy and chaotic for the unprepared traveler. Appleton International Airport Director Abe Weber advises everyone to plan ahead and get to the terminal early.
“You always have people who show up at the last minute. It certainly increases their anxiety and stress around their travel experience. It’s always best to arrive a little bit early so you can travel with a little less stress and anxiety, get to where you need to be, and enjoy your holiday,” Weber tells WTAQ News, “They’re going to want to provide themselves a little extra time because some people might take a little bit longer through the security checkpoint, at the ticket counter line, or boarding the airplane. So it’s always good to have a little extra patience and understand things may take a little bit longer during holiday season.”
When it comes to the busiest days to travel, Weber says the days immediately before and after the holiday are the ones to avoid if you can.
“Wednesday we’re going to see an increase in flights and air traffic activity. It’ll probably go to minimal flights on Thursday and Friday, however we still have flights coming in from major hubs.”
The Saturday and Sunday following Thanksgiving Thursday are also going to see a higher number of flights.
Despite the regular holiday influx, Weber hopes a new valet service at Appleton International Airport will help expedite the process for travelers.
“They park their car, take their keys and their luggage, and they’re right inside by the security checkpoint. And when they return, they can get their keys back from the welcome desk and they’re out the door and back in their car in a matter of minutes,” says Weber.
Weber also recommends for travelers to look up the best travel tips and to refresh themselves on carry-on restrictions and other rules before getting to the airport.
