GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The head of Bellin Health is reacting to the Wisconsin Supreme Court striking down the state’s mask mandate.
“This is going to give Wisconsin the opportunity to show what we’re made of,” Bellin Health President and CEO Chris Woleske told WTAQ on Wednesday. “That we don’t need a mask mandate. That we’ll make the right decision based upon the science and continue to wear our masks.”
The state’s Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in a 4-3 decision that regardless of the intention behind Governor Tony Evers mask mandate, issued last July, he is legally obligated to consult with the legislature to extend emergency orders past the 60-day mark.
“Some [leaders] have said ‘we just don’t want the government to tell us that we have to’,” Woleske said. “So now is the chance to say ‘we don’t need a mask mandate, we’re still going to have significant compliance with masking.'”
She says that you should keep wearing the masks even as COVID-19 infection rates stay steady while vaccination rates rise.
Healthcare officials largely opposed ending the mandate.
