GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The statewide mask mandate has been struck down. But will that lead to local governments trying to implement their own once again?
Brown County Public Health will likely continue to encourage and recommend for residents to take precautions like masking and distancing. At least for now.
“Right now, we’ll continue to encourage and recommend that people continue to wear a mask until we’re out of this…Brown County [Public] Health will continue to encourage, more than likely put out an advisory recommendation for people to continue to wear the mask. That’s where Brown County will be at this point,” said Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “The Board of Supervisors would have to take a vote and authorize it, no different than what you’re seeing with the the legislature in the state. As of right now we haven’t heard any communication from supervisors requesting that.”
The City of Green Bay will be holding a special common council meeting on Thursday.
“I’ll be recommending that we put in place a face covering requirement in the city of Green Bay,” said Mayor Eric Genrich. “It’s something that we’ve had in place since July, and we are just so close to the end of this pandemic. We know vaccines continue to ramp up and roll out at a much more rapid pace.”
Both Streckenbach and Genrich again encouraged residents to sign up and get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“We’re just at the finish line, we’re almost there. Vaccines just opened up to anybody over the age of 16, and we’ll continue to encourage to get the vaccine. We really want to get to that 80-percent so that our economy can totally, fully reopen,” Streckenbach told WTAQ News.
“[We’re] just asking people to continue doing everything we’ve done that to get us to this point. The end is in sight, we just need to continue to listen to our public health experts, mask up, and get the vaccine as soon as you’re eligible,” Genrich added.
The City of Oshkosh passed a face covering ordinance earlier this month, which has now been triggered by the end of the statewide mandate.
Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson declared that county will also issue its own mandate in a press release on Wednesday evening.
As I say here, President Biden is strongly encouraging state and local governments to issue orders. We’ve got to do all we can to limit the spread of the virus and save lives. I’m taking action to protect our communities. https://t.co/av4nPxJq9j
