APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Places like entertainment venues or airports might soon require people to show proof of being vaccinated for COVID-19.
If you are traveling in the U.S. you don’t need to show a COVID -19 vaccination card yet.
But Patrick Tracey with the Appleton International Airport says there are half a dozen digital health passports already in development.
They show proof of COVID -19 vaccination or negative tests.
“The proof of COVID test or potential proof of vaccination – that would be located within the airline’s system as part of your travel documents,” said Tracey.
Tracey says U.S. travelers might use digital health passports for flights as soon as this fall.
The Global Business Travel Association is a business travel and meetings trade organization.
A recent poll shows that 66% of members believe implementing Digital Health Verification, also known as “vaccination passports” or “digital green certificates” is a good policy.
They agree that it will help open travel and reduce the need for mandatory quarantines.
“It reduced their need to quarantine from 14 days down to five days, so the digital health passport is already in use in some countries overseas,” said Tracey.
American Airlines is already using an app called VeriFLY for international travel – but mostly to show negative COVID-19 testing results.
“The way that it works is it syncs up with your health care provider and your vaccination information goes into your app,” said Tracey, “And as you’re flying the app provides proof of vaccination to the airline and your destination country so that you can travel seamlessly with your digital health passport.”
“Do you think it will deter people from traveling?” asked Fox 11.
Tracey replied, “You know it is hard to tell, the entire world is getting more complicated, and our phones are gateways to the entire world now.”
Tracey says he thinks the technology is overdue, because you’ve needed verification of Malaria and other vaccines to travel overseas.
