GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police officer charged in the death of George Floyd last summer, is ongoing in Minnesota.
Floyd’s death in police custody sparked a wave of protests and riots across the country last summer, including right here in Northeast Wisconsin.
Green Bay was the site of unrest several times last summer, including a May 31st incident in which Leo Austin, 28, is accused of firing a gun into a crowd of people at the Marathon Gas Station on Walnut Street, where looting was taking place. Several other arrests were made.
Green Bay Police say they’re keeping a close eye on social media and keeping in touch with community partners.
“We have no intel to believe that any unrest or anything problematic is going to occur in the City of Green Bay,” Commander Kevin Warych told WTAQ. “The department constantly monitors what’s going on in the community. We’ve learned from what happened in 2020, and we’re going to be better off in 2021.”
Warych says the department always supports peaceful assembly, regardless of the reason why.
George Floyd, a black man, was killed last May after Chauvin was seen on video holding his knee down on Floyd’s neck while arresting Floyd for allegedly passing a fake $20 bill.
