GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Parks Department is looking to open up a bit more this summer, but they’re going to need a little help.
“Last year was a really great test run. We operated last year generally most of our facilities at a very reduced capacity, with a lot of COVID-19 protocols in place,” said Recreation Supervisor, Ann Moeller. “We’re opening things up a little bit more. We learned from a lot of things last year. We know what it’s going to take to keep everything highly sanitized, disinfected, cleaned.”
Last year, there was just one pool open. This year, they’re hoping to open all three facilities. But they need the right level of staffing to do so.
“We have been actively recruiting and reviewing applications. All of our jobs have been open for a good month or two, and they’re coming in pretty slow at this point,” Moeller told WTAQ. “We’re in full swing, and we’re struggling.”
Right now, there is a serious shortage of lifeguards. Many returning lifeguards didn’t work last year, meaning their certifications may have lapsed. However, as long as someone can pass a lifeguard and swim test, the department will certify them – meaning anyone hoping to be a lifeguard doesn’t have to pay hundreds of dollars for certification classes or training.
“High school, college students – really anyone who’s looking for a little extra cash this summer, we most likely have a job that will fit anyone’s needs and interests,” Moeller said.
They also need ride operators at Bay Beach Amusement Park and playground leaders for their playground programs – among other positions.
“We are starting to review applications, I know interviews have already started to take place. Applications for all of our positions can be found on the City of Green Bay website,” Moeller said.
