GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The City of Green Bay is already looking for its next Police Chief, and they know the kind of person they’re looking for.
“We’re looking for a number of things,” President of the Police and Fire Commision, Rod Goldhahn told WTAQ. “If you look back historically, what has been successful for Green Bay has been a police department led by a chief that’s very interested in community engagement.”
Community engagement and partnerships, Goldhahn says, has been what defines the department.
“Our community policing programs and our outreach programs have been very successful,” said Goldhahn. “We’re going to look for a chief that has experience in those kinds of things and a proven record.”
Chief Andrew Smith Announced his retirement last month after five years on the job. It will become effective in May. Smith, an Iron Mountain native, came to the job from outside of the community, serving before as a Commander in the Los Angeles Police Department. Goldhahn says Smith won’t be easy to replace.
“Chief Smith has done a fine job,” Goldhahn said Friday. “I think the community response to him has born that out.”
The city has been advertising for the role this month and applications will be open until the end of April.
