GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Many people are receiving texts, claiming to be from Amazon, that they won Apple Airpods or some other high-value item. But clicking into the attached link isn’t the best idea.
“It may be tempting just to click on that, even though you are suspicious of it. Y may think there’s no harm in just clicking through to see what happens,” said Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau. “There is harm and just clicking through…The purpose of those text messages is either to get you to reveal some kind of personal information like asking you to pay for shipping and handling or to download some malware onto your phone or computer.”
Bach says Amazon is the leading company that sees impersonators reported in the BBB’s Scam Tracker Portal. Which means a lot of people are ‘winners’.
“There are classic red flags here. You didn’t apply for any kind of survey or didn’t take part in any kind of raffle so why would they be sending you a winner notification?” Bach said. “Ignore any kind of request to say stop or no to stop receiving those kind of messages because that’s just verifying that they reached an active phone number.”
