ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Air travel is starting to take off again, even to international destinations.
“At the beginning stages I thought it was awesome because planes were empty, it was like a limo,” business traveler Greg Cole said.
Cole has been traveling over the course of the pandemic for work.
“And then one day I went on a flight and people started flying again,” Cole said.
“A lot of people are flying. A lot of families visiting friends, visiting relatives, it’s that business sector that we’re still trying to bring back,” Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport Director Marty Piette said.
Travel agencies are also seeing an uptick in travel interest.
“We are seeing a lot of people requesting information about certain destinations, including Mexico and the Caribbean,” Fox World Travel business relationship director Rose Gray said.
Gray tells FOX 11 they’re also experiencing a spike in interest and arrangements for warm weather destinations in the U.S.
Piette tells FOX 11 as demand increases, so will flights.
“The airlines however, they are starting to bring employees back that were furloughed. They’re also adding flights, adding capacity because they’re seeing demand increase.”
While flight prices are also rising, Piette says they’re still reasonable.
“I think as air travel starts to return to pre-pandemic levels, we’ll see those airfares get back to the same point that they were, which truth be told, $350 round trip to get anywhere in the US is still not a bad deal.”
Starting next week, fliers booking basic economy tickets for some major airlines will not be able to change or refund tickets.
