GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — In the wake of two deadly shootings in Atlanta and Colorado, Green Bay Police are urging perspective.
“Statistically speaking, the likelihood of something [like that] happening is low,” said Green Bay Police Lt. Jeff Engelbrecht. “We want people to know that and not walk around scared, but be prepared.”
Green Bay Police, too, are prepared. Lt. Engelbrecht says the department has trained for active shooter scenarios for years.
“We actually take a look at an incident like this and work our way through and talk about what our response would be like conceptually,” Engelbrecht told WTAQ. “Including the resources that we would need, and then physically practicing those responses.”
They don’t always train alone, however. They offer training to schools, businesses, and community organizations to learn how to handle threats.
“Part of our office’s responsibility is reaching out to the public and offering training,” Engelbrecht said Tuesday. “Both for organizations and entities within the city of Green Bay.”
In Atlanta, Georgia, nine people were killed at three massage parlors by a 21-year-old man, Robert Aaron Long, who allegedly told police he shot the victims, who were mostly Asian women, because of his sexual addiction. In Boulder, Colorado, ten people were killed at a supermarket by a man identified as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. The motive for that shooting isn’t clear.
