KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Officials say no criminal charges will be filed against a Kewaunee County deputy for firing shots at an abduction suspect.
The investigation revealed Friday Luis Cardona shot his ex-girlfriend Babette Caraballo, before fatally shooting himself.
Officials say Cardona abducted Caraballo by gunpoint at her place of employment in Green Bay on November 19th.
Authorities were able to track Cardona’s vehicle near an ATV park in Kewaunee County.
According to DCI’s report, while stopped and seated in the driver’s seat, Cardona fired a .45 caliber handgun at Caraballo, who was seated in the passenger seat. She was struck several times before she opened the door and collapsed to the ground. That’s when Cardona fatally shot himself.
While Cardona was firing shots inside the vehicle at Caraballo, Deputy Aaron Schley fired at Cardona’s vehicle three times, but Cardona was never struck by those bullets.
Caraballo was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.
The report says although Deputy Schley never struck Cardona, Deputy Schley was justified in using deadly force.
