FISH CREEK, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – 2020 is just a day away, and a chance to get outside and exercise is just a trip to Door County away.
The First Day Hike event will be Wednesday at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek.
Near Parking Lot 5 the Highland Road location is where people are expected to kick off the new year, with a little exercise.
“Generally, we just try to locate ourselves near one of the trails in the park. This year, we’re starting from the warming shelter near the golf course, because the shelter we usually use is not available. But there’s still the golf course to hike on, there are also some trails here,” said Steve Strucely, Friends of Peninsula State Park Business Manager.
Strucely tells FOX 11 the two-mile trek is designed to be simple.
“It’s mostly flat ground and such, and it’s easy for families and children and parents to hike on.”
A vehicle park sticker is required. People are asked to dress for the season. That means a winter coat and boots. Strucely says snowshoes won’t be needed this year.
“It looks like it’s actually going to be a pretty nice day, like in the thirties that day, so it should be comfortable.”
He’s expecting about 50 people.
“It is invigorating. It’s nice to exercise. It’s fun to be within the group of people that are wanting to come out and start out the new year fresh. The person leading the hike usually has some interesting historical information to share too, about parts of the trail that we’re hiking on.”
Organizers say the hike is a good way to celebrate the new year, and the new decade too.
“To be out in the park, and exercising, and I think, a lot of people, because they’re having fun, and partying and stuff, they do like to come and exercise, and start afresh, in the fresh air,” said Chris Holicek, Friends of Peninsula State Park President.
First Day Hikes became a national event back in 2012, and are held in all 50 states.
