GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is reportedly taking the helm of the Dallas Cowboys. But what do fans think about the move?
The Green and Gold faithful we met outside of Lambeau Field on Monday had some mixed emotions about Mike McCarthy’s new job.
“I’m happy for him and I hope we play Dallas so we can kick his butt,” says Derek Lutz of Ashwaubenon.
“Good riddance,” Ron Knickelbein says, but he also wished the former coach well in the future.
Some fans looked at how he would deal with the change on a personal level.
“I feel like it’s going to be a challenge for him. I know it’s just a job for them, but it’s hard as a Packer fan to see one of our best coaches go to Dallas,” Julie Hill says.
Others took a more analytical approach, calculating how McCarthy’s tendencies will pair with the current roster for the self-proclaimed “America’s Team.”
“I think it’s a really good hire for Dallas. I’m glad Green Bay doesn’t have to play them next year. He’s always been offensive-minded and they’ve got all the tools and weapons, just needed the right coach to put them in the right place,” says John Collar of Winchester.
Fans were generally thankful for his tenure and Super Bowl victory, but admit not everything can last forever. Even though he still has a street sign bearing his name around the corner from Lambeau Field.
“I think it’s great, I think the time he spent here was awesome but it was overdone. Hats off to him and look forward to him moving to Dallas,” says Jenny Murphy.
There are still some Packers fans who aren’t huge fans of McCarthy, especially in the later years of his time in Green Bay. But one fan outside the Packers Pro Shop spoke for what seems to be on the minds of many.
“Good for Mike,” Alex Byrne says, “Obviously he did a lot of great things for the Packers and I was happy to have him as our coach, but obviously a couple of years of missing the playoffs isn’t acceptable here in Green Bay unfortunately for him. I hope he does well there and wish him nothing but success.”
Except for when he plays the Packers of course.
The two teams don’t play during the 2020 regular season, but a faceoff could be possible in next year’s NFC playoffs if McCarthy can lead the Cowboys back to the postseason.
A formal announcement of McCarthy joining the Cowboys is expected sometime this week.
