DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The power of nature was on display Thursday at a popular Door County Recreation site.
Wind and waves pounded the Lake Michigan shoreline at Cave Point County Park.
On days when strong winds are from the south and east, people come to see the surging surf.
“We heard that the waves were going to be pretty high today with the winds. So we decided to come out here and take a look,” said Mark Wagner, Brussels.
“We’ve been to Cave Point many times, and this is incredible. I’m just amazed at the sound and the feeling of it. You can hear it, and you can feel it right here just standing. It’s unbelievable,” said Mary Kay Wagner, Brussels.
A wintry mix was in the forecast, but close to the lake, it was hard to tell. The spray frosted most of the shoreline, leaving a path of ice in its wake.
“Yes. We’ve had high water and that’s kind of what drew us out here, just to see this,” said Wagner.
Ben Nelson, Door County Parks Superintendent, tells FOX 11…
“With the elevated water levels on Lake Michigan, and pretty much everywhere locally, lately we’ve started to experience some erosion occurring at Cave Point.”
Holes line some of the walkways, spewing an exhaust of air and water, even startling some of those looking for the source of the spray. Nelson says his crews are watching the situation too.
“We’ve done our best to try to mark those places that may present a risk. It’s ever-changing up there, so you just continually monitor it, and formulating your response.”
In the meantime, people are asked to be careful while taking in the power of nature.
Cave Point is one of the most popular parks in Door County, welcoming an estimated 400,000 visitors each year.
