FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Several dogs, including puppies were rescued from a house fire in Fond du Lac.
Unfortunately not all the pets could be saved.
Crews were called to the two-unit home on 8th St. around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday for a fire on the first floor.
The occupant of the upper unit was able to get out safely, while the occupants living on the first floor were not home at the time of the fire.
Fond du Lac Fire says while a hedgehog, lizard and some exotic birds survived the fire, two Sugar Gliders did not. The Fond du Lac County Humane Society is helping residents care for their surviving pets.
Firefighters say there were no working smoke alarms on the first floor or in the basement of the home.
The city’s chief building inspector deemed the building to be inhabitable and 12 people are now displaced.
“The quick actions of the upstairs occupant to exit the building with his daughter and call 911 helped fire crews to keep the fire contained to the first floor”, said Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary. “ This outcome could have been must different if this fire occurred during the overnight hours. Working smoke alarms give us an early warning of smoke conditions and should never be removed for any reason.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
