CLINTONVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An individual who was asleep inside an apartment in Clintonville was helped to safety by police after a kitchen fire had started.
On Sunday morning just after 4:00 a.m., the Clintonville Police Department was called for an active smoke detector and the smell of smoke inside an apartment building located at 20 Wilson Street.
When officers arrived to the scene they entered the apartment where the smoke was located and found the kitchen fire as well as the sleeping resident.
The resident was safely taken out of the apartment by police.
With the help of other residents of the building, police began evacuating others still in the building.
The fire was contained to the lone apartment.
The Clintonville School District provided temporary shelter and transportation for the tenants of 10 Wilson Street, 20 Wilson Street and 30 Wilson Street.
American Red Cross was called to assist and says they are helping residents from six of the units with lodging and other immediate needs.
Fire officials in Clintonville cleared the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
