GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Brown County Officials are warning about the upcoming flood season.
During a Monday press conference, officials from Brown County and the City of Green Bay said they anticipate flooding issues, which were widespread last spring, to pop up again in 2020.
“All of the Great Lakes are at the highest water level on record except for Lake Michigan and Lake Huron,” said Brown County Sheriff Todd Delain. “But they will be later this month or in March.”
Infrastructure discussions are already underway on the local level, but Brown County executive Troy Streckenbach says it’s not a matter of if the floodwaters rise this Spring, it’s a matter of when.
“You’re not going to ask mother nature to stop until we can come up with a plan or build the infrastructure to address this issue,” said Streckenbach.
A website, FloodinginBC.com, is designed to help homeowners and area residents find out whether or not their homes are in danger of flooding. If they are, Sheriff Todd Delain says you might want to look at your homeowners insurance policy: it probably doesn’t cover flooding.
“Often times, what we find out after [a flood] is that they thought their homeowners insurance covered flooding,” “I would encourage you to look at getting flood insurance.”
But it’s not just about having a plan for your property, it’s about staying safe, too.
“Create a three day supply kit,” Public Health Officer Anna Destree said. “One that has clothes, cash, food and water.”
Emergency Management Director Lauri Maki says flood situations can occur at a moments notice, so proper preparedness ahead of time is the best way to keep yourself and your family safe.
