MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A bill to rename Green Bay’s Walnut Street Bridge for former Packers player and coach Bart Starr took another step forward Tuesday.
The Senate’s Transportation, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee held a public hearing on the bill at the Capitol.
The bridge carries State Highway 29, so action from the Legislature is needed. The bill would dub the bridge the “Bart Starr Memorial Bridge.”
No votes have been scheduled by the committee or the Senate or Assembly.
The Walnut Street bridge is the only one of Green Bay’s Fox River crossings not named. The others: The I-43 bridge near the mouth of the river is named for businessman and Paul’s Pantry founder Leo Frigo The Main Street bridge is named for former Packer Ray Nitschke The Mason Street bridge is named for former Mayor Donald Tilleman.
Starr, the MVP of Super Bowls I & II, died May 26.
