CALUMET COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Law enforcement is stepping up patrols around Lake Winnebago during the start of sturgeon spearing season.
Wisconsin State Patrol says it’s teaming up with the Department of Natural Resources and the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office to make sure drivers are being safe and sober.
Starting Saturday, extra patrols will be out around the lake.
Trooper Justin Hansen says their emphasis throughout the weekend is to keep impaired drivers off the road.
“It’s like any big, event weekend that we have in Wisconsin. We have extra patrols out because we know that there are going to be more people that are probably going to be making some poor decisions and getting behind the wheel when they’ve probably had too much to drink and so that’s why we’re going to have extra patrols out and we’re going to partner with our local law enforcement and hopefully try to keep everyone safe,” Hansen said.
Spearing begins on Saturday and runs daily from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The season is scheduled to last 16 days, or until the safe-harvest cap is reached.
