GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – UW-Green Bay has decided that the home which had housed university leaders was no longer needed. This week, the UW System Board of Regents approved the sale.
The 3,465-square-foot, single family home sits on a 1.6 acre site. It has three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half-baths. It “reflects the architecture of the period with vaulted ceilings and a sprawling partitioned floor plan”. It’s located at 3015 Bay View Road, south of campus.
The school considered it a fixer-upper.
“Since the property needs extensive housing and site improvements, and there are other options available on campus for entertaining, the university has decided the property is no longer needed,” according to the system’s description. “The finishes in the house are dated and at least $70,000 is needed to update the bathrooms and other interior areas plus another $20,000 for site improvements.”
Appraisals valued the property at about $350,000. It was listed at $385,000 and the “final offer was accepted at full price,” a state document says.
Online Brown County land records still list the UW System as the owner as of Friday.
“Per the agreement when the house was originally donated to the university, the revenue generated from the sale will be used to fund the creation of a student meeting activity space,” the state says.
The school says plans are still being worked on for that space, as well as the replacement for hosting events previously held at the home.
“Higher education faces a tidal wave of change, including the role of residences for campus leaders. State universities in Wisconsin have gravitated away from these accommodations preferring to host events on campus. As a result, UW-Green Bay has sold the Chancellor’s Residence and the University is reinvesting funds to construct a special space on the third floor of the Edward W. Weidner Center for the Performing Arts designed for hosting functions for students, faculty and community. This new space is connected to one of the Weidner Center’s two catering kitchens, making food and beverage service convenient.”
Sue Bodilly, Director of Content and Media Relations, tells FOX 11…
“The spectacular views from the third floor of the Weidner Center are truly panoramic and add a special ambiance for guests attending receptions and dinners. This space allows University leaders to engage guests on an entirely new level not previously available on campus. It is designed to facilitate the same functions previously hosted by chancellors in the former residence.”
UWGB currently has an interim chancellor, Sheryl Van Gruensven. She did not move into the home, according to Bodilly. Contract negotiations with the next chancellor will address housing issues, she said.
