GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Bad news if you’re an ice skater: it doesn’t look like the ice rinks in the city of Green Bay are going to be opening this year.
Rollercoaster weather and temperatures have spelled disaster for parks and rec officials in charge of the ice rinks in Green Bay parks.
“One week we might have two days of really cold weather, and then following that is two days of 40 degree weather and high sun,” Parks, Rec, and Forestry Department Vice President James Anderson told WTAQ. “So no matter what we do on the ice rinks, the work is pretty much ruined.”
Anderson says it’s the first year in his 12 year career that the rinks haven’t opened at all.
“You usually get anywhere from, on average, 8-12 weeks of the ice rink season,” Anderson said. “This is the first year that I’ve been here…that we haven’t officially opened yet.”
But it’s not all bad news…
“Due to the lack of ability to get the ice rinks up we have been able to allocate more time to working on our cross country ski trails and fat tire bike trails around the city,” said Anderson. “That’s been pretty successful.”
Some people have opted to use the rinks anyway, however they are not officially open for skating and are not staffed.
Temperatures are expected to rise, again, this weekend.
Meanwhile, Titletown’s ice skating rink in Ashwaubenon is still open throughout the winter season, weather permitting.
