MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — What better way to spend Leap Day than by honoring the man who invented the Lambeau Leap?
The Wisconsin state Assembly has declared next Saturday — Feb. 29 — LeRoy’s Leap Day. The day honors longtime Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler. Butler performed the first Lambeau Leap in a 1993 game against the Los Angeles Raiders. He received a lateral from Reggie White on a fumble recovery and returned it for a touchdown. After scoring, Butler jumped into the stands to stop his momentum. It soon became a tradition for Packers players to jump into the crowd after scoring a touchdown.
The Assembly’s resolution says Butler will spend Leap Day raising funds for Hebron Housing Services, an organization that serves the homeless in Waukesha.
Butler was a finalist for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but was not selected in the voting done earlier this year.
Butler played his entire 12-year career with the Packers.
