MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A woman made her initial court appearance Tuesday for the alleged intoxicated driving crash which killed her 9-year-old granddaughter.
Monica Walker, 51, has not been formally charged but had a bail hearing Tuesday for the crash which killed Tkyia Brewer.
Bond was set at $10,000 cash. Walker returns to court Monday for a formal initial appearance.
During court, Walker’s daughter — and the mother of the victim — addressed the commissioner by phone. The woman, who was not identified, said there was black ice at the time of the crash, and that her mother “did not mean to do what she did.”
While criminal charges have not been filed, online court records indicate Walker was also issued tickets for inattentive driving, and operating a vehicle without insurance.
The crash happened at 8:40 a.m. Monday on Interstate 43, just south of Middle Road. Walker lost control of the vehicle and it rolled into a ditch. Brewer, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle and died, according to the sheriff’s dept.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Dept. is requesting charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle, and operating after revocation, but did not offer specific details of why the intoxicated driving charge is being considered.
