TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A nature center in Manitowoc County is trying to grow and it’s asking for the public’s help.
Woodland Dunes in Two Rivers hopes to raise more than $1 million for the project.
Some describe Woodland Dunes as an oasis packed with nature in Two Rivers.
“Not only for wildlife but for the community as well,” said Jim Knickelbine, executive director at Woodland Dunes.
“People can get out, they can not only relax but they can get exercise as well. Just kind of unwind a little bit without having to go up north or things like that, it’s a very accessible place in their own backyard.”
A free destination for families, the 1,500 acres of land is often used as a place to educate people on plants and animals. It’s a busy spot for hikers, school field trips and other educational programs.
“This preserve is a natural classroom and provides our students with so many opportunities to actively engage with their surroundings,” said Lisa Quistorf, district administrator for the Two Rivers Public Schools.
With more than 220 bird species, it’s also a popular destination for bird watchers from around the world.
“What local communities benefit from birders is $14.9 million and they spend that on food, lodging and transportation,” said Jason Ring, executive director of the Manitowoc Area Visitor & Convention Bureau.
The center says its growing popularity has caused it to outgrow an 1800s farmhouse that serves as the center’s main building.
While adding 5,000 square feet of new gathering space, Knicklebine tells FOX 11 the center wants to make sure visitors are still connecting with nature once they step inside.
“We really wanted to incorporate the history of this farm by keeping the farmhouse.”
What is right now a very small space, will be opened up to much more spacious, larger rooms that can serve more people at once. Leaders also plan to add more parking.
The total cost of the renovations is $2.2 million. Half of that has already been raised by donors.
The project will be done by this summer.
