GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — With freezing temperatures comes the risk of frostbite, and that risk could be great over the next few days.
Lows in the double digits below zero and highs that aren’t much warmer are going to be the norm for a bit, and in temperatures like that, frostbite can set in within minutes on uncovered skin.
“If you’re outside and dealing with any moisture, so if you need to be handling anything wet with your hands…or working with your skin uncovered, those are all very big risk factors,” Bellin Health Nurse Practitioner Dylan Valentine explained. “The risks are basically time spent outside, with temperature, and what you’re doing outside.”
That means something as simple as scraping off your car in the mornings without wearing gloves could lead to a risk of frostbite.
“When you have [severe] frostbite there’s potential that it necessitates amputation, or otherwise nerve damage,” said Valentine.
Early warning signs include discomfort and numbness in your extremities like your fingers, toes, and nose. Serious cases are indicated by bluing or white skin.
