GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Another school zone enforcement effort in Green Bay saw fewer tickets given out than during a previous effort in Janaury.
Green Bay Police made 49 traffic stops during an effort to focus on safety around school zones. They were out for around six hours on Tuesday. Lt. Brad Strouf managed the enforcement.
“It went alright,” Strouf told WTAQ. “The ultimate goal would be to have as little enforcement as needed…in a perfect world we would have zero citations, but of course we don’t live in a perfect world.”
Citizens were notified of the effort beforehand. Police say they issued 37 tickets and 31 written warnings. That’s a lot lower than the 58 citations issued during January’s effort.
“Overall having fewer traffic stops is encouraging,” Strouf said. “Especially since we’ve made no secrets, intentionally, about where we plan on being and why we’re out there.
The most common violation was speeding.
“There were a number of citations that were issued in excess of 30 mph,” said Strouf. “That doesn’t sound like a lot in a 25 mph zone, but we have to remember that when children are present that limit drops to 15 mph.”
The crackdown is expected to continue. It’s part of the department’s “Slow Down, Green Bay” traffic enforcement program.
