APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An Appleton man has been sentenced to federal prison for robbing a credit union two years ago.
Matthew Krueger, U.S. Attorney for Wisconsin’s eastern district, says Xengxai Yang, 21, was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison. He was found guilty in October of Armed Bank Robbery, Brandishing a Short-Barreled Rifle During a Crime of Violence and Possession of a Short-Barreled Rifle.
According to court records, Yang entered a credit union on Appleton’s west side in March of 2019.
As he approached the counter, he pulled out a short-barreled shotgun and demanded money.
The tellers gave money to Yang, who used cable ties to restrain two of the employees.
He then left on foot and was apprehended a block away. Appleton police recovered $10,000 in cash.
Yang later admitted to robbing the credit union, saying he “decided to try something new today.”
After completing his 14-year sentence, Yang will be on supervised release for five years.
