GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Traffic engineers in the city of Green Bay are working to understand where certain signage or lights are necessary.
“Just because they’re going to a different appropriate lighting could mean that maybe the signage or the lighting is not necessary, or maybe it’s a speed issue. That’s what the traffic study is going to tell the traffic engineers, and then we respond based off the study,” said Police Commander Kevin Warych. “The role of the law enforcement agency is really more about education. We want to let the community know what they’re going to expect to see at these intersections.
But as the department focuses on education, there is still some confusion for drivers that has led to a few crashes around town. To keep up on changes, head to the Green Bay Police Department Facebook page or the City of Green Bay’s website here, and click under the option for Traffic & Railroad.
“For all the drivers that go through these intersections multiple times a day, multiple times a week, our goal is education. To make sure that they know that this could be changing and that what they saw yesterday might not be [the same] today,” Warych told WTAQ News. “May be a change going from a 4-way traffic signal in all directions to stop signs to flashing reds. Each intersection is a little different, but it’s important that the community knows that there are changes at these intersections.”
As a reminder: Red flashing lights means it’s red in all directions. Drivers have to come to a complete stop, make sure that they yield to traffic going in the opposite direction, and proceed safely in the intersection. Flashing yellow means proceed with caution. Drivers may have to slow down or stop before proceeding. They are also reminded to yield to any pedestrian or other vehicle before safely traveling through the intersection.
“We just need people to be safe. They need to follow traffic rules to keep everybody safe,” Warych said. “We usually have this talk in September or the end of August, but the intersections in the city are going to change dramatically with the amount of kids and people in them one school goes back into session or a blended learning model. It’s a good reminder that people need to proceed with caution.”
