WAUPUN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A state appeals court Wednesday upheld the conviction and sentence of a former police officer convicted in a multi-county burglary spree.
Bradley Young, a former Waupun officer, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2015 for burglaries and other crimes in seven counties, including Green Lake, Waushara, Waupaca and Fond du Lac.
Young appealed, claiming the judge was biased because he did not disclose he had previously represented one of the victims. But the appeals court rejected it.
“We conclude that Young failed to rebut the presumption of impartiality. The court stated that he did not recognize that a former client was among the victims in Young’s case until after Young sought postconviction relief. The court explained that the attorney-client relationship was superficial and ended several years before Young was sentenced. No reasonable person could question the court’s impartiality under the facts of this case,” it wrote.
The court also rejected Young’s argument the judge was biased because he was a former law enforcement officer.
