GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay’s city council voted 9-3 to extend the city’s mask mandate until March 31st.
It was set to expire at midnight last night.
Even though there’s a statewide mask mandate, the city has kept extending its mandate as a fallback option.
It almost took precedent last week when the Republican-controlled legislature was set to vote to repeal the state mandate. However, it delayed the vote after realizing the state could lose millions of dollars in food assistance.
At Green Bay’s meeting, there was an amendment offered to only extend the city mandate two weeks, in hopes a county-wide decision could be made.
“I think that the Brown County Health Department needs to provide direction to the rest of the county because Green Bay will have an ordinance, De Pere will have theirs, and a whole patchwork of other municipalities are not going to have an ordinance most likely,” said Jesse Brunette, the city council’s president.
“What does it hurt if it goes to March 31st and then it gets extended by the country or the state?” said Barbara Dorff, the city council’s vice president.
The amendment failed on an 8 to 4 vote.
