GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – For Green Bay parents, getting kids back to the classroom is in sight.
Some parents, like Lisa Masny, tell FOX 11it’s not soon enough.
“With my experience with my kids at home, I don’t agree with it at all. I mean the depression, the anxiety, and my kids who have never experienced these issues. We’ve had to enroll them in extracurricular activities like dance and things like that to kind of get them out of the house and keep them going.”
Masny is the guardian of two high schoolers, and a parent to a middle schooler, an elementary schooler, and a three year old.
“It’s just kind of absurd to me that kids are able to go to the Y, they can go to dance classes, they can do sports, and these extracurricular activities but when it comes to school, they’re not able to go back yet.”
Masny isn’t the only one who has seen her kids struggling with their mental health.
One parent says her kindergartener is happy to be at home. For her 5th grader, that’s not always the case.
“It’s been a little hard for her because she’s in the social stage. She can’t see her friends, her classmates, her teachers. It was hard for her but actually she’s going to counseling to deal with that sort of stress,” Green Bay parent Norma Merlin Jimenez said.
Jimenez’s husband is a teacher in the district as well.
“I think they’re doing the best they can in the situation. I mean nobody has gone through a pandemic before.”
While some parents say their students struggle with virtual learning, others say they excel.
“I absolutely see that my kids have learned the entire time,” Green Bay parent Theresa Kaquatosh said.
Kaquatosh has three daughters in the district, but plans to continue keeping them at home.
“Definitely until we’re vaccinated my kids won’t be returning, but that was my choice. But if they were going to be returning, I’m glad that they at least have a plan of something to work towards now.”
