Karen Schwind
KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A woman who allegedly stole from her employer and filed fraudulent tax returns pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Karen Schwind also waived her preliminary hearing on the two counts, court records show. Not future hearings were scheduled.
According to the criminal complaint, Schwind altered QuickBooks records for a Kiel company to make it appear as though a legitimate vendor had been paid when, in fact, the check was made payable to Schwind. The complaint also states that Schwind failed to report the income she embezzled from her employer during 2018 and 2019 on her income tax returns. Schwind embezzled over $62,000 during 2018 and 2019 and evaded $3,297 in taxes.
Schwind also faces 71 fraud and theft charges in Manitowoc County. No trial date has been set in that case.
In the Manitowoc County case, she allegedly stole more than $63,000 from the trucking company she worked for.
She was previously convicted for a similar incident in Fond du Lac County. The Manitowoc firm noted it had not done a background check on Schwind before hiring her.
