SISTER BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An effort is underway in Door County to help those who may be in need.
From grocery delivery to questions about the upcoming election, The Door County Emergency Support Coalition is open for business.
At the Door County Piggly Wiggly, Lauren Kita is doing some Monday morning shopping. She works at the store part-time, and knows the shelves well.
“Today we got some pizzas, and some eggs. Some cereal, potatoes.”
Kita tells FOX 11 she’s working for someone else’s list who can’t make it to the store.
“Some of the lists are 10 items, some of them are 25 items. So it depends but usually, it’s around 20 minutes.”
The groceries will be picked up curbside or even delivered. The effort is part of the Door County Emergency Support Coalition formed one week ago.
“We obviously have never seen anything like Covid-19 in Door County,” said Chris Hecht, Door County Fire Chiefs Association President.
Chris Hecht is also the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Fire Chief. He tells FOX 11 The Door County Fire Chiefs Association is coordinating the initiative.
“The crux of the coalition is to take all of the departments, the 10 fire departments, and then partner with other private and not-for-profit organizations to leverage our ability to manage resources. Our resources, and their resources to best meet the needs of the community.”
It’s more than just groceries, medications, and other necessities, volunteers are also helping deliver democracy.
“They will come to your location. They will take a picture of your identification. They will submit it electronically for you, and get an absentee ballot sent to you,” said David Lienau, Sister Bay Village President.
And there’s another plan. Lineau tells FOX 11 the fire station in Sister Bay will offer drive through voting.
“They will mark it while they’re in their car, and then they will physically put in into a voter box. And they will drive out the other side.”
The Door County Emergency Support Coalition has a pool of about 300 volunteers, and the group is looking for more.
