HOWARD, WI (WTAQ) — You could be getting your next cocktail to-go next time you’re ordering out.
That would become legal under a new bill proposed by Republican 4th district assemblyman Dave Steffen of Howard, and he wants to get it passed as quickly as possible.
“Take-out orders have really been what have sustained many of the restaurants and taverns around Wisconsin [during COVID-19],” Steffen told WTAQ. “Allowing them this opportunity could be transformative.”
Struggling restaurants are, as of now, unable to package cocktails as part of to-go orders, with some instead providing “do-it-yourself” cocktail kits containing loose cocktail ingredients without the alcohol. Under the proposed bill, that brandy old-fashioned you’ve been missing could be served in a single container, just as intended.
Steffen is setting a tight timeline.
“Every single week we delay is another bar, another restaurant that goes under in Wisconsin,” Steffen said. “Cocktails-to-go has to be on the fastest of tracks. I am confident that this will be on the Governor’s desk in less than three weeks.”
As for Steffen’s assembly colleagues, he says the one’s he has spoken to have been in favor of the measure.
