GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Senate has until Sunday at noon to vote on the stimulus bill before the new session starts. Meanwhile, some people have started receiving their $600 stimulus checks, while others are still waiting.
People in Northeast Wisconsin have different ideas on how they will spend the money, and what they think about the amount.
For Mark Lukes, he’s waiting for $600 to hit his bank account.
Lukes said, “I didn’t get it yet, but it’s on it’s way.”
He says the money will primarily be for one thing. Bills.
For Skip Kernan, he says his money will go towards groceries and to support small businesses.
“A lot of small businesses are hurting big time so it’s going to help out and hopefully get some money flowing to small mom and pop stores as I like to call them,” said Kernan.
But others are worried the checks won’t serve that exact purpose.
John Ellis said, “people are going to spend it at Walmart and all the big box stores.”
And, that not everyone is in need of the checks, like Ellis.
“Some people need it, I don’t need it,” said Ellis, “my wife and I have been working the whole time.”
Which is why Ellis thinks only some people should receive the money.
“Just to blanket give it away to everyone is ridiculous,” said Ellis.
As for the possibility of more cash hitting people’s pockets if a $2,000 check is approved, some are in favor.
Rich Yeigel said, “everybody could use it, but it would’ve been nice if it was the $2,000. I think there’s a lot of people hurting right now.”
“That would be great I mean it’s really going to go long ways to help restore the economy,” said Kernan.
While others are against it.
“There are people that need to but to give to everybody, two thousand dollars we don’t need it, it’s just ridiculous,” said Ellis.
“It may be more than we need,” said Lukes.
Direct deposits for the stimulus money should be received by early January. If you’re expecting a check, it could take a few extra days.
If you’ve already received your $600 and Congress approves more money, the IRS says the remaining amount will be distributed as soon as possible.
