A bankruptcy court finalized an agreement ordering Golden Guernsey Dairy, LLC to pay former employees past wages and benefits from when they closed their Waukesha facility back in 2013. The company filed bankruptcy and shut down unexpectedly. The issue was that Golden Guernsey didn’t follow state law and give a closure notice to employees or compensate them.
At the time of the closing, the company employed over 100 people. According to Wisconsin’s business closure law, companies in the state are required to give employees at least a 60 day notice before closing their doors for good. During that 60 day period, the employer also has to keep paying their employees and providing benefits, which Golden Guernsey failed to do.
Once employees started to complain, that’s when the Department of Workforce Development’s Equal Rights Division began investigating the situation. They decided that Golden Guernsey owed employees over $1.56 million. All together, each former employee will receive up to $11,750.
