GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Will Christmas morning 2020 be the snowy, magical spectacle that is reminiscent of every movie out there? Forecasters still aren’t quite sure.
The Green Bay and Fox Valley area see a White Christmas about 70-75 percent of the time. But this year especially, it will depend on just how far north you live.
“The definition of a White Christmas is one inch or more of snow on the ground Christmas morning,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Kurt Kotenberg. “It does look like there’s going to be some precipitation during the overnight hours Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, but temperatures will likely be in the mid to upper thirties. So it’s seeming more like it’s going to be more so in the form of rain.”
The normal high in Green Bay around this time of year is about 27-degrees. Wednesday will continue into the mid-to-high thirties.
But that doesn’t mean the Heat Miser is sticking around all week. Friday morning, lows will hit near zero in areas like Wausau and Rhinelander. Green Bay will likely be seeing highs in the single digits.
“When we wake up Wednesday morning in Green Bay here might be close to 40 degrees depending on when that cold air comes in the temperatures by midnight could be near 20 degrees,” Kotenberg said. “Depending on how this cold air comes in the temperatures could fall 10 degrees within a 3 hour period during Wednesday afternoon.”
With that said, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day might be a good time to hang out near the fireplace.
“It looks like we’re going to get a snap of the coldest air that we’ve had so far this winter season actual air temperatures will probably struggle to get out of the teens maybe middle teens for high temperatures on Thursday,” Kotenberg told WTAQ News. “We’ll see winds speeds probably at least in that 10-15 maybe 20 mile an hour range for both mornings…For Thursday and Friday mornings, we’re going to get the ‘Hello!’ introduction to winter because wind chill values can be approaching -10 to -20 degrees both mornings…And it’s going to be that really cold wind too, where you step outside and you’re like: ‘Woah!’ It’s going to be that feeling.”
If you have plans to head over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house, or any other place for the holiday, Kotenberg recommends making sure you’re bundled up and paying attention to road conditions. Especially if it rains, and then freezes over.
“So if you are going to be out and about, definitely bundle up with hats, gloves, coats, and stay indoors much as possible,” Kotenberg said. “Certainly if you have travel plans on Wednesday, keep an eye out for the weather…Roads could really freeze up and become slippery pretty quickly if their untreated so just be careful out there Wednesday if you’re traveling, be prepared.”
