(UW-MILWAUKEE ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY – DeAndre Gholston recorded a double-double to highlight four players in double-figures as the Milwaukee men’s basketball team handed Green Bay a 74-62 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Kress Center.
The Panthers (3-1, 2-0 Horizon League) went ahead for good early in the second half against the Phoenix (0-6, 0-2 Horizon League), using a 13-1 scoring run while holding their opponent without a field goal for over eight minutes to put the game away.
Gholston finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, with Josh Thomas close behind with 15 points. Thomas added five rebounds and three assists.
Amir Allen put together a great outing, recording 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks in just 18 minutes. Te’Jon Lucas was also in double-figures with a stat-stuffing line of 11 points/7 rebounds/5 assists.
Amari Davis led the Phoenix with a game-high 21 points. P.J. Pipes and Josh Jefferson added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Green Bay.
The Phoenix who had only 7 turnovers were outscored 40-22 on points in the paint and 19-5 on bench scoring.
Milwaukee took the lead for good on a Gholston triple that made it 41-38, building a lead to as many as seven at 52-45 on a pair of free throws by Donovan Newby. As was the case yesterday, the Phoenix wouldn’t go away, eventually climbing back within a possession at 52-50.
From there it was all Panthers, holding GB without a field goal for over eight minutes during that 13-1 run that took the lead to 65-51. The advantage hit double-figures at the 4-minute mark and never got closer.
An even first half that ended where it started on the scoreboard, Green Bay was forced to use a timeout just 74 seconds into the afternoon when the Panthers quickly ripped off three straight makes.
Milwaukee held a lead midway through the first at 19-15 on a Devon Hancock three, only to see six unanswered from GB turn the tables and put them ahead, 21-19.
The MKE deficit eventually grew to 28-23 on a pair of GB three’s, but the Panthers had a scoring run of their own in mind. Newby put the topper on it, with his tough finish in the lane and free throw completing the three-point play to make it eight straight and a 31-28 at the 3:39 mark.
The game saw three lead changes the rest of the period with Gholston’s buzzer-beating layup knotting the score at 35-all at the horn.
The Panthers shot just under 50 percent for the game (26-for-56), while also winning the rebounding battle, 39-30. They held the Phoenix to under 40 percent (.389/21-of-54) overall and dominated points in the paint, 40-22
