APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — The Appleton School Board is walking back a previous idea to bring Kindergarten through 4th Graders back in half-day increments starting next month.
Appleton Schools Chief Financial Officer Greg Hartjes says parents objected to the half-day increments saying it complicated work and daycare scheduling. Instead, they’ll go back to a previous plan: full day school five days a week starting January 19th.
“As long as the pandemic conditions are OK,” Hartjes told WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl’. “That’s the plan we’re going to do with.”
Appleton Schools have been mostly online all year so far, but the administration says the time has come to look at returning, and they’re following the lead of nearby school districts.
“We’ve learned a lot,” Hartjes said. “We’ve learned a lot about mitigation strategies, we’ve learned a lot from the other local districts that have been in person, teaching. That’s been really important to us.”
The entire plan is contingent on COVID-19 numbers continuing to fall locally. If the burden rate increases, classes will remain largely online.
