GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A homicide suspect was granted a speedy trial request Friday, even though his attorney and the judge expressed doubts the attorney can adequately prepare for trial in time.
Brion Hatcher allegedly killed Tavarious Edwards during a Jan. 27, 2019, incident at a home on George Street.
At a hearing on Friday, defense attorney Michael Covey said Hatcher was invoking his right to a speedy trial, which requires a trial to start within 90 days.
Judge Tammy Jo Hock told Hatcher was being “completely unreasonable” to expect his attorney to be prepared, but still set a March 1 trial date. The parties will return to court Jan. 21 to see if the March 1 date is possible.
Jury selection would begin Feb. 26.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told authorities Hatcher believed Edwards stole $1,000 from him. However, when speaking with police, Hatcher denied having any problem with Edwards or involvement in his murder. Edwards died from a gunshot wound in the neck.
The trial had been scheduled to begin today with jury selection, but the state Supreme Court suspended the license of Hatcher’s previous attorney, prompting his replacement last month.
