MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin approached a record high single-day death count and saw nearly every county in the state move into the “critically high” category for coronavirus activity.
The state Department of Health Services reported 83 deaths on Thursday, just below Tuesday’s record total of 92. Meanwhile, testing showed 6,635 new confirmed cases, or 34.5% of the 19,220 total completed.
Seven-day averages moved to 6,440 new cases, 33.1% test positivity and 52 deaths.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 338,472 total cases, more than 2 million negative tests and 2,876 deaths.
According to the state’s weekly dashboard, 71 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties were listed in the “critically high” category for coronavirus activity. Only Green County, along the Illinois border, was listed in the “very high” category.
In Northeast Wisconsin, Kewaunee and Winnebago counties were listed as having growing trajectories of virus activity. Brown, Door, Fond du Lac, Outagamie and Waupaca counties had shrinking trajectories. All others saw no significant change.
The alternate care facility at State Fair Park in West Allis had 17 patients as of Thursday. That was five fewer than on Wednesday.
