GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Green Bay alder is concerned about how masking is being enforced.
Alder Randy Scannell tells FOX 11 the mask mandate is not always easy to enforce.
“It really does take people being on board and being compliant.”
He still feels city and county leaders should do more to flatten the curve.
Green Bay Police received 43 calls regarding masking since the mandate went into effect.
“Someone calls our dispatch center, they keep a running log and then keep track of where it was at. All the police jurisdictions in Brown County are working with the health department where if there is a violation, it’s turned over to the health department,” Green Bay Police Community Lieutenant Steve Mahoney said.
Mahoney tells FOX 11 businesses have been compliant so far.
“While we do talk to management staff at various places in the city of Green Bay or when the health department has they’ve been very accommodating to remind their employees and customers to please wear their masks.”
“I was concerned that maybe there were businesses that actually were fighting the face mask but that does not seem to be the case which is really good news. Seems to be more of an individual thing,” Scannell said.
If an individual won’t wear a mask and refuses to leave a business when asked, police will intervene.
“It will be more of a trespassing issue instead of a violation of the mask ordinance,” Lt. Mahoney said.
Police say they’re still in the phase of educating the public.
“With the climate nationally with people’s opinion towards the police department we still want to educate. There has been no citations issued in the city of Green Bay for a violation of the mandate and there’s also no one that’s been cited for trespassing for refusing to wear a mask and/or leave the store when asked.”
Scannell says he is pleased with the actions the police are taking, but still feels city and county leaders can do more to better control the spread of the virus.
“It seems to me maybe the county needs to do more than the city. I’m not sure. We’ve got to start working on seeing what we can do to turn this curve down.”
Scannell hopes to call on the county for a report on what they’re doing to enforce masking as well.
