OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — There’s a new surge coronavirus testing site at UW Oshkosh.
US Surgeon General Jerome Adams toured that facility Friday morning, it’s one of 13 across the state of Wisconsin at UW campuses opened as part of a federal surge testing effort.
“An aggressive testing plan the tests both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals is the most effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19 and prevent shutdowns,” Adams said, flanked by Wisconsin DHS secretary designee Andrea Palm and UW System President and former Governor Tommy Thompson.
The sites will use a stock of 250,000 rapid-results antigen tests sent to those testing sites by the federal government. They can give COVID-19 results within hours, instead of the several days required by PCR tests.
“We know that many people are frustrated with what had been a long wait times for the PCR test in the past,” said Adams. “People don’t want to come in to get a test if they don’t think they’re going to get the results back for days or sometimes weeks.”
The state of Wisconsin has seen three days of new COVID-19 infections exceeding 5,000 this week.
