GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Ballot machines are whirring and votes are being tallied in the City of Green Bay.
“Things are going really well all across the city,” Mayor Eric Genrich told reporters. “We’ve seen strong turnout throughout the city 3,600 ballots at our combined sixteen polling locations at 10:00 AM.”
Genrich said things seemed to be going smoothly this morning when he dropped in to check on the polling sites at Sears and the Johnsonville Tailgate Village.
“People were queued up at Sears, I heard a report of somebody at 5:30 AM in the morning to get out there with his own chair, so it’s it’s great to see that enthusiasm,” Genrich said.
Going into Tuesday, the city had totaled 31,189 absentee ballots – which are being tabulated in the Central Count. The city chose to move that location from City Hall to the KI Convention Center weeks ago to provide for better spacing for workers. As of an 11 AM press briefing, Genrich says somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 ballots had already been processed.
The count is being held at the KI Convention Center West Grand Ballroom, 333 Main Street.
If you’d like to check out the Central Count process, head there and ask for an Election Observer tag. There are observers from both major parties that will be on-site all day to review the process. It’s also being live-streamed here.
There has been some confusion for voters on where to drop off absentee ballots – or where they’re supposed to go to cast their in-person ballot.
“If people still have an absentee ballot they want to fill that out they can drop it in one of our drop boxes until 7:00 PM,” Genrich told WTAQ News. “A number of the polling locations have been changed. That decision was made back in the summer by our a clerk and our council, who authorized those changes.”
If you’re looking to find your polling place, enter your address at MyVote.WI.gov or call the city clerk’s office at 920-448-3010.
As for technical issues – there was a bit of a delay to start the day for voters at UW-Green Bay.
“One of our machines was not up and running right at 7:00 AM, so there was a bit of a delay in getting that online,” Genrich explained. “But there was no malfunctioning or any problems with equipment. It was just kind of a matter of the the machine being a little slow to wake up.”
While the morning tabulation started off slow, Genrich credited that to the prep work required this morning. He expects the speed to pick up as the day progresses.
The city will provide further updates this evening.
