APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – One WTAQ’s Morning News with Matt & Earl, Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson officially announced he is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Ron Johnson in 2022.
Nelson says he’s been thinking about this for awhile, but Johnson’s comment about how Wisconsin had flattede the COVID 19 curve put him over the top.
In a statement released today, Nelson wrote:
“As the county executive for one of the hardest hit COVID areas in the U.S., I have been on the front lines trying to protect lives in the absence of any real leadership from Washington. Ron Johnson vowed to vote for Amy Coney Barrett even if he had to do it in a moon suit. Instead of doing his job of helping Wisconsin through this crisis, he’s helping Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell push through partisan judges, disregarding Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s last wishes. Wisconsinites have had enough of Ron Johnson’s embarrassing tenure and I am not going to wait another day. We need a Senator who will acknowledge that the COVID pandemic is real and has the right priorities.”
Nelson is the first entrant into the race and the first declared candidate for the 2022 election cycle.
Johnson was first elected in 2010, and was re-elected in 2016. The seat will be on the ballot in November, 2022.
While the county executive position is non-partisan, Nelson served in the Wisconsin Assembly as a Democrat from 2005-2011. He lost the general election for the 8th Congressional District to Rep. Mike Gallagher in 2016.
