GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the area hard, local doctors and nurses are asking the public to take it seriously.
The healthcare workers spoke during a press briefing on Wednesday entitled “Faces of COVID”, saying they’re working long hours caring for patients in crowded ICUs. Jessica Schaumberg is a nurse at Bellin Health, she says the virus in draining.
“You don’t just get to be admitted, lay in a bed, get medicine, get oxygen, and get better, it’s a fight,” Schaumberg said. “It takes a lot of energy.”
Dr. Manar Alshahrouri is a Prevea physician working with COVID-19 patients, he says the misinformation and lack of trust from the public is frustrating.
“Look around you, we are one of the hotspots in this country,” Alshahrouri said. “How many of us know a single person who has not been affected by this?”
Alshahrouri also lamented the politicization of mask wearing and social distancing, as well as the impact social media is having on the public perception of the pandemic.
“Look at your community. Enough with the social media quackery,” said a visibly frustrated Alshahrouri. “We want people to move away from this being a political issue.
Hospitals have seen a serious increase in COVID-19 patients over the past several weeks. As of Wednesday, 122 people are in the hospital with COVID-19 in Brown County.
