STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Sturgeon Bay alderman was issued a disorderly conduct citation for allegedly behaving inappropriately in front of three women who were collecting signatures on a petition to recall Gov. Tony Evers at Sturgeon Bay’s Martin Park on Sunday.
According to a police report, the three women had set up a booth at Martin Park.
Ald. David Hayes, who is also the chairperson of the Democratic Party of Door County, approached the tent and reported to police that the women were possibly campaigning without a permit. He stated he didn’t believe the women had a permit and believed they should be removed from the park, according to the report.
The police department says the women did have a permit and contacted the Sturgeon Bay parks department and the city to use the space.
When the officer arrived, she tried to unsuccessfully to contact Hayes. The officer then went to the tent to talk with the women.
According one of the women, Hayes approached the tent, demanded they didn’t belong there and mentioned he was a Sturgeon Bay alderman.
As Hayes began to walk away, the woman says she mumbled “wow, what an (expletive),” which led Hayes to charge back toward her and yell “you’re a (expletive)! You want me to grab your (expletive)! Well that’s what Trump would say.”
The other two women said they did witness Hayes’ behavior and found his words “extremely offensive.”
The officer who received Hayes’ call made contact with him afterward. Hayes said he was upset the women didn’t provide a copy of the information he thought was required to rent the space in the park.
On Monday, Sturgeon Bay police received audio from the call made by Hayes. According to the complaint, Hayes clearly stated “(expletive), can I grab your (expletive), what else can I do for you? That’s what Trump says, Trump says it all the time.” These comments were made shortly before Hayes began to talk with dispatch about his complaint.
All four individuals and another man at the park provided written statements of the incident.
Sturgeon Bay police gave Hayes a disorderly conduct ticket for $263.50. A court date has been scheduled for Oct. 19.
