GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A large freighter is expected to move through the Port of Green Bay on Sunday, right as a boat parade in support of President Donald Trump is expected to be held.
Coast Guard Lt. Amy Hockenberry says it’s not as though the boat is expected to leave a particularly strong wake or pose any unusual danger to boaters.
“It’s not like this vessel is transiting through and there’s not going to be locals on scene being able to help escort, or help regulate,” she told WTAQ on Friday.
Large ships combined with a large pleasure boat flotilla do make for an unusual situation. That caused the Port of Green Bay to issue a safety warning.
“We want to make sure the small recreational boats know these are going to be coming down the Fox River,” said port spokesman Mark Walter. “These boats are large enough that they may not even see recreational boats that are too close to them, and definitely can’t slow down in time to prevent a collision if someone cuts in front of them.”
The rally is scheduled around 1 pm, starting at the mouth of Green Bay and travel south to Voyageur Park in De Pere.
