GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — 8th District Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher is reacting to the shooting of a black man in Kenosha.
“I have yet to meet a legislator or even a police officer or law enforcement professional that looked at what happened with George Floyd and looked at what happened and expressed anything other than, ‘oh, this is a tragedy and we should get to the bottom of it’,” Gallagher told WLUK. “I think what you’re seeing is we don’t want to rush to judgement without a full counting of the facts.”
Gallagher criticized Governor Tony Evers for his initial reaction to the shooting and argued that when the full facts surrounding the shooting of Jacob Blake come out, it might not be considered police brutality at all.
“He’s basically saying that this police officer acted mercilessly and this was evidence of widespread police brutality,” Gallagher said. “So think about that, does Gov. Evers know that Jacob Blake wasn’t going for a gun? I don’t know, we don’t know right now. If he was, what is the protocol for the police in that case?”
Evers condemned using excessive force against Black Wisconsinites in his statement released just hours after police shot Blake, but not before first acknowledging the missing details.
